Before starting at the Institute, Gerard had been involved in education in Catholic schools for over thirty years. He was principal at St Brendan’s, Ganmain (NSW), Corpus Christi, Kingsville (VIC) and most recently at St Patrick’s, Mentone (VIC).

Gerard worked as a contributor to the “To Know, Worship and Love” religious education project, and in 2005, he set up “Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, Victoria” to promote the work of Sofia Cavalletti in Religious Education. He was the first doctoral graduate from the John Paul II Institute, Melbourne. His thesis explored the relationship between the anthropology of nature and grace in the context of Catholic education.

Gerard and his wife, Anne, have five children and six grandchildren. They served as president couple of  the National Association of Catholic Families from 2003-2007.

Since 2007, he has been delivering courses connected with religious education and catechesis at the John Paul II Institute. Gerard’s primary interests lie in the fields of education and catechesis. He has contributed articles to the journals 'The Sower', 'Journal of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd' and 'The Priest'.
