JP8121/9121 Biblical Theology of Marriage and the Family

This subject begins with a consideration of differing approaches to the Sacra Pagina, with special reference to the Pontifical Biblical Commission's recommendations in The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church (1993) and Pope Benedict XVI’s Verbum Domini (2010). After an overview covering relevant background historical and sociological contexts, the subject will proceed to a systematic consideration of key biblical texts, beginning with the creation narratives in Genesis, moving through a consideration of the wisdom and prophetic traditions and their respective treatments on marriage and family. In considering the New Testament, we will examine the teachings of Jesus and Paul in relation to marriage, family roles, and the significance of celibacy in light of Jesus’ preaching of the Kingdom of God. Students will be equipped with a body of this knowledge which will enable them to undertake professional work in the field and serve as a basis for further learning.
