JP8120/9120 Nature and Method of Theology

This subject offers students an introduction to the nature and method of theology, including: foundational principles, the role of philosophy in theology, the significance of scripture as a source in theology, the significance of tradition as a source in theology, aids to discernment in theology, including human experience and the teaching of the Magisterium and plurality and unity in Catholic theology. It also gives students a basic introduction to the thought of significant 20th century Catholic theologians (in relation to their dialogue partners, and the principle issues which engaged them) and an overview of what have been the major issues in Trinitarian theology, Christology and ecclesiology across the centuries. Students will be equipped with a body of this knowledge which will enable them to undertake professional work in the field and serve as a basis for further learning.
