JP9118 Christ and the Trinity in the Fathers

This subject introduces students to the fundamental contents and parameters of the Christological and Trinitarian doctrines as they were developed and delineated in the formative centuries of the Church’s life. Progressing historically, and revolving around key thinkers, themes, and councils, the subject attends to the various modes of patristic theologising on these doctrines, the social, ecclesial and historical contexts within which the doctrines were articulated, and the tensions at play in the relations between orthodoxy and heresy, creative and inauthentic development. Students will be equipped with a body of this knowledge which will enable them to undertake professional work in the field and serve as a basis for further learning.
