JP8780 Icons and Idols: The Theology of Images

This subject will cover the theology of images and the role of art in the Catholic tradition. It will investigate and assess key debates regarding the relationship between the visible and the invisible, and will link these debates to the history of western art and image making. It will also cover the changing historical relationships between images and devotional practices and the impacts that the rise of the artist and of claims for the autonomy of art have had on art’s capacity to be iconic. Students will be equipped with a body of this knowledge which will enable them to undertake professional work in the field and serve as a basis for further learning.
