JP8528/9528 Faith and Reason and the New Evangelisation

This subject examines the inter-related themes of the modern dilemma and the new evangelisation. The modern dilemma may be described as the overall effect of modern rationalism, which has brought about a situation in which there is an apparent conflict between human freedom and Divine Law. This problem is in essence an anthropological one, and for this reason the response offered by the Second Vatican Council in its Christological anthropology of Gaudium et Spes is examined and its application explored. The new evangelisation thus presents the theological virtue of faith as the only possible fully realist epistemology, the theological virtue of charity as the only adequate response to the question of human freedom, and the theological virtue of hope as the only fully adequate explanation of the mediation of history in the realm of ontology. Students will be equipped with a body of this knowledge which will enable them to undertake professional work in the field and serve as a basis for further learning.
