JP8512/9512 New Evangelisation and Pop Culture

This subject will critically analyse the claims of popular culture as an expression of customer sovereignty by reviewing the history of popular culture from the 19th and 20th centuries. It also aims to give the student a familiarity with the underpinning economic logic (e.g. Post-Fordist Capitalism) of popular culture and some of the main conceptual terms that pertain to popular culture (e.g. Commodification). Focus will be placed upon the new opportunities as well as the challenges that post-secularity poses to the task of disseminating the Gospel. Students will be equipped with a body of this knowledge which will enable them to undertake professional work in the field and serve as a basis for further learning.
