JP8510/9510 Genealogies of Modernity

This subject explores the genealogy of modernity in the thought of prominent contemporary commentators, including Alasdair MacIntyre, Charles Taylor, Louis Dupré, David L. Schindler, René Girard, William T. Cavanaugh and John Milbank. It pursues a historical or ‘genealogical’ method of analysis, reading modernity within the historical matrix of its genesis and development, and paying attention to consequences for the approaches to evangelisation. Students will be equipped with a body of this knowledge which will enable them to undertake professional work in the field and serve as a basis for further learning.
